Road Freight
Most goods destined for Europe and a proportion of the goods destined for the Middle East are transported by road in combination with a ferry crossing (roll-on roll-off, or lift-on lift-off). Goods are usually carried on 12-metre trailers which have a loading capacity of about 20 tonnes or 60 cubic metres. Traffic can be divided into full loads and groupage which are either driver accompanied or unaccompanied vehicles.
Freight charges are by weight or volume. However, invariably these charges only show the cost from depot-to-depot. There are a number of additional components to be taken into account, such as collection, export handling, documentation, customs clearance, import handling and delivery to the consignee’s premises, etc.
