Rail Freight

Despite well-publicised problems, the Channel Tunnel offers more options for rail-borne traffic. However, there will continue to be a role for the conventional rail ferry particularly for the carriage of hazardous goods. There are a number of services currently available such as train load services; waggon load services; rail container services; piggyback services; train ferry services and rail express services. Many transit times are already competitive compared with road freight over the longer distances, for example, two days from Birmingham (UK) to Marseilles (FR) could be reduced to 24 hours using the Channel Tunnel.
