The challenge
Multinationals operating across the ASEAN Economic Community faced a customs landscape of ten national regimes, a regional tariff agreement, an emerging ASEAN Single Window and transit system, and a wave of new free trade agreements, with few advisers able to work across all of them. Deloitte set out to build a regional customs practice to meet that demand.
Our role
Customs partner in Deloitte’s Asia Pacific Customs Centre of Excellence, building and leading the South-East Asian offering.
What we did
Building the practice across nine ASEAN Member States and advising multinational clients on compliance and facilitation: the ASEAN Trade in Goods Agreement, the ASEAN Single Window, the ASEAN Customs Transit System and the major regional free trade agreements including the TPP and RCEP. The work also involved engagement with the European Union, JICA, the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank and USAID on the trade facilitation programmes then under way in the region.
What was delivered
A regional customs offering serving multinational clients across South-East Asia, and the private-sector experience of ASEAN customs regimes that underpins the firm’s work for businesses today.
